NRDC creates solutions for lasting environmental change, protecting natural resources in the United States and across the globe. In terms of public heath, NRDC is focused on getting rid of toxic chemicals in our environment—in the food we eat, the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the products we buy—to help protect the health of millions of people.
The Orton Foundation supports the NRDC’s national antibiotics campaign to spread awareness and end the misuse of antibiotics in the meat industry. Through publications and communications, NRDC educates the public on antibiotic use in factory farms and how to avoid consuming meat raised with unnecessary antibiotics. In 2016 NRDC identified the companies that source meat from farmers who raise livestock and poultry without routine antibiotic use. Some of these companies are Applegate, Chipotle, Chick-Fil-A, Elevation Burger, Fresh Direct, and Panera Bread.
The Orton Foundation also provides supports for the NRDC’s efforts to clean up the hog industry in North Carolina through legal advocacy in communities most affected by CAFOs.
